Subjective and objective statements in English
(Source: Sudarwati. Look Ahead. Jakarta: Erlangga.)
The use of personal pronouns and judgmental words in the text (e.g. I believe, coming to my own conclusion, I feel, therefore I must conclude) results in a clear expression of the writer’s feelings. As a reader therefore, you become very aware of the writer’s presence in this text. In writing an exposition text, however, personal writing like this should be avoided.
Look at how the same opinions is expressed in the following sentences.
| Subjective | Objective |
| Sentence 1 I think that management could take a softer stance against our union. | Sentence 2 Management could take a ofter stance against the union. |
| Sentence 3 A softer stance could be taken against the union. |
