In narrative text type, we commonly use sentences in the past tense, such as: simple past tense, past continuous tense, past perfect tense, and sometimes Future in the past form (would).

Pay attention to the following text:

She dreamed about the eggs she would buy when she had sold the milk. The eggs would hatch, then she would sell the chickens. With the money she had earned, she would buy fine clothes for herself.

Once, when a lion asleep, a little mouse began running up and down upon him. He went up to the lion and soon gnawed away the ropes.

One day, when the general was out ridding with some friends, his horse stumbled and cast a shoe.

A.      Simple past tense

The use: simple past tense expresses an action which happened at specific time in the past and is now finished.

Simple past Tense is used to tell a story.

B.      Past tense

Past continuous expresses an activity happening at a particular time in the past and expresses an activity that was interrupted.

e.g.      :

1)      What were you doing when the general came to your house?

2)      When he arrived, I was making some coffee, or

3)      While he arrived, I was making some coffee.

Past perfect expresses an activity that happened before an activity in the past.

e.g.      :

1)      When the mouse came, the hunters had gone with the lion.

2)      After the hunters had gone, the mouse came to free the lion.

3)      The girl had counted the money she fot before the eggs hatched.

Futre in the past form expresses an activity that was planned in the future, but it happened in the past time. This form is commonly used in a story that happened in the past.

e.g.      :

1)      She thought that she would sell the eggs in the market.

2)      She was sure that all the eggs would hatch soon.

misalnya :

1) Ketika mouse datang, para pemburu telah pergi dengan singa.

2) Setelah pemburu pergi, mouse datang untuk membebaskansinga.

3) Gadis itu menghitung uang yang fot sebelum telur menetas.

Futre dalam bentuk masa lalu mengungkapkan kegiatan yangdirencanakan di masa depan, tapi itu terjadi di masa lalu. Formulir ini umumnya digunakan dalam sebuah kisah yang terjadi di masa lalu.

misalnya :

1) Dia berpikir bahwa ia akan menjual telur di pasar.

2) Ia yakin bahwa semua telur akan menetas dalam waktu dekat.
